Work Experience

Bolton Wanderers Football Club: Various during 2014/15 season

I used my contacts at Bolton Wanderers to gain a brief period of work experience in September 2014 in order to learn how to operate the Football League interactive website’s content management system.

I also contributed programme pieces and helped out on matchdays when available, assisting with tasks such as filming post-match press conferences.

This access gave me a great insight into how the media department of a Championship club operates.

The Guardian: 17th – 21st December 2012

I spent five days in the sports department of the Guardian. It gave me an insight into the workings of a newsroom at a national newspaper and earned several bylines over the period. These ranged from a preview of Chelsea vs Aston Villa to an article detailing how weather conditions will affect sporting events over the Christmas period.

Aston Villa Football Club: 3rd – 7th September 2012

I was delighted to seal five days of work experience at my beloved Aston Villa and I relished working in the club’s media department and visiting Bodymoor Heath. While at the club I shadowed website editor Paul Brown and gained a fantastic insight into the workings of a Premier League club. I interviewed Villa Ladies manager Joe Hunt for an article published on the club website and wrote various pieces, including player profiles, for publication on the website. I also helped out in other areas, such as proof-reading the matchday programme. I was invited back in December 2012, where I helped out with live text commentary on the website during home fixtures against Tottenham Hotspur and Wigan Athletic

Preston North End Football Club: 28th August – 2nd September 2012

I helped the club out by volunteering to write a match report of the under-18s’ game away at Walsall. Following this I asked for a work placement and was granted a week at the club at the beginning of 2012/13. I worked alongside media officer Jonathon Swift and general manager Ben Rhodes, writing several articles for the club website, including hospitality and marketing articles. I also contributed to the matchday programme for the upcoming fixture against Hartlepool United, and attended two home fixtures against Crystal Palace and Swindon Town, compiling articles for the club website post-match.

Blackpool Gazette: 20th – 25th August 2012

As I had contributed several Fleetwood Town match reports to the Fleetwood Weekly News during 2011/12, my request for a five-day work placement at the Blackpool Gazette was granted. I worked alongside sports editor Andy Moore, Blackpool reporter William Watt and Fleetwood reporter Rob Stocks. While I was there I used my contacts at Fleetwood Town to write articles for the newspaper, including interviews with the manager and players, and also attended Bradford City vs Fleetwood Town, writing an on-the-whistle match report.

Shoot! blogger: June – October 2012

I wrote regular blog pieces for Shoot! on Fleetwood Town FC, including several online articles and an interview with Nathan Pond for the magazine, before putting forward a fellow Fleetwood volunteer to take over as I focused on my final year of university.

Video editing

I made this video in October 2008, inspired by Gabriel Agbonlahor’s role in Aston Villa’s 2-1 win over rivals Birmingham City. It represents my interest in video editing and expressing creativity through sport and music. I used Roxio Easy Media Creator to make this video but I also have experience in using Adobe Premiere, Apple iMovie and Windows Movie Maker.
