Soham Town Rangers FC

In the summer of 2013 I approached my then-local football club Soham Town Rangers, who ply their trade in the Ryman League Division One North – the fourth step of the non-league pyramid.

They were looking for a programme editor and I, along with fellow volunteer AJ Fleet, was happy to oblige. We worked on each matchday programme together – AJ oversaw the design and production of the programme, while I produced, collated and sub-edited all of the content.

While AJ commissioned the design of a smooth and professional-looking publication, I suggested features and articles to be included which would mean fans gained as much as possible from reading their club’s matchday programme.

It included an introduction from manager Steve Fallon and captain Michael Simpson, updates from reserves coach Andrew Lee and under-18s coach Chris Gibson, as well as match reports, social media interaction and interviews with different players each week.

DSCF1719We received many positive comments for our work and I really enjoyed helping out my local non-league club. It was great to put the skills I have learned at university and during work experience to good use by contributing to a club which relies on volunteers like me. It was a brilliant way to keep up my writing, interviewing and match-reporting skills while I searched for full-time employment, and programme editing is something I have always been attracted to.
