During Fleetwood Town’s first Football League campaign, I was a regular contributor to the matchday programme, ‘Talk of the Town.’ After compiling research on a variety of matchday programmes in the summer and suggesting a number of ways to improve Fleetwood’s own programme, I introduced two new articles.

‘The Big Interview’

‘The Big Interview’ became the centrepiece of the programme and was introduced as I noticed Fleetwood didn’t run regular interviews with members of the squad like most other matchday programmes. I took the initiative to attend training sessions and interview players to write up each one into an article or, if I could not attend a training session (such as over the Christmas period when I was away from university), I transcribed an interview conducted on my behalf. I did not contribute to the final few programmes of the season due to a large amount of university work. Below you can read all of the ‘Big Interview’ articles I wrote.

‘On the Line’

I also introduced ‘On the Line,’ which was situated near the end of the programme. This is made up of 10 light-hearted questions posed to players for a more ‘fun’ article for fans to enjoy. After initially thinking of new questions for each participant, this naturally became more and more difficult, so halfway through the season I introduced a new questioning format whereby I ordered 115 questions into sections and numbered them accordingly, encouraging players to pick numbers from each section to ensure the questions were asked randomly. Below you can read a few samples of the ‘On the Line’ articles I conducted.

On the Line with Jamille Matt, published for 16/02

On the Line with Jamie Allen, published for 02/02

On the Line with Youl Mawene, published for 20/11

On the Line with Scott Davies, published for 01/12

Programme Editor

I successfully edited two matchday programmes for Fleetwood’s pre-season friendlies against Oldham Athletic and Tranmere Rovers while communications manager Derick Thomas was away on holiday. Although they were only 16 pages long, I enjoyed the responsibility that came with being an editor and being able to have my say on what went in the programme was satisfying. Below are the back pages from both programmes which show me listed as editor. Full programmes can be sent on request.

My primary focus for Fleetwood during 2011/12 was match reporting and writing articles for the club’s website, but I still wrote several articles for ‘Talk of the Town.’ These included:

Interview with Alan Wright, published for 07/01 – I was lucky enough to interview one of my Villa heroes on behalf of Fleetwood for an article which was published in their historic third round FA Cup tie with Blackpool, one of the club’s biggest games in recent years. After conducting the interview over the phone, I met Alan at the game and he was happy to sign my article.

Interview with Magno Vieira, published for 12/11 – This article with former Wycombe striker Magno Vieira was my first ‘Big Interview’ and was published in Fleetwood’s first round FA Cup tie against the Chairboys.

Scout Report, published for 28/04 – This ‘Scout Report’ is one of many examples of a wide range of articles I contributed.

Article on non-league and the international break, published for 11/10 – After attending my first Fleetwood game against Forest Green, I was invited to write about my experience for the upcoming programme.
