Fleetwood Town

I was part of Fleetwood Town’s media department as a volunteer for 18 months between October 2011 and April 2013, while studying sports journalism at university.

I initially approached the club as I required a certain amount of work experience for a university module and ended up staying on for an additional season beyond the specified period.

During my time at FTFC I developed as a writer and a journalist under the guidance of the club’s media staff while also building up a wide range of useful contacts.

I ensured I was a hard-working, creative and diligent professional at all times and, in turn, became a valued member of the press team, demonstrated by the club’s awards night at the end of the 2012/13 season, where I was recognised for my efforts with an on-stage presentation.

I departed FTFC with a fantastic introduction into how the media department of a Football League club operates and the necessary skills required to successfully operate as a media assistant.

During my time there I contributed to the following aspects of the club’s media output:

• Wrote a number of articles for the club website, showing my initiative to produce stories and content
• Wrote interesting and engaging match reports – often sent ‘on the whistle’ – for Fleetwood Town’s official website, the Fleetwood Weekly News and the Blackpool Gazette, while covering both home and away fixtures
• Provided match coverage from Fleetwood Town’s official Twitter account
• Conducted post-match interviews
• Compiled in-depth research into various matchday programmes ahead of the 2012/13 season and contributed a number of ideas and suggestions for Fleetwood Town’s own matchday programme, many of which were implemented
• Introduced the ‘Big Interview,’ the centrepiece of the programme,’ and ‘On The Line,’ a short, light-hearted interview, which I went on to compose each week
• Attended training sessions and built up a positive rapport with players and staff
• Demonstrated my versatility through video editing, filming and photography
• Forged contacts with a wide range of journalists

I also enjoyed the following opportunities while at the club:

July 2012: Acting Programme Editor for the Oldham Athletic and Tranmere Rovers home pre-season friendlies
October 2012: Acting Press Officer for Fleetwood Town’s fixture at Cheltenham Town
November 2012: Obtained a press pass for England U21s vs Northern Ireland U21s, in which Fleetwood Town’s Conor McLaughlin was involved, to report on the game for the club

Unfortunately my online articles are no longer accessible due to the club’s re-structure of its website shortly after my departure, but please see below for examples of my work published in the club’s matchday programme and in local newspapers:
